    What is a Smart meter?

Smart meters are the next generation of gas and electricity meters and they can offer a range of benefits. For example, they can tell you how much energy you are using through a Smart Energy Tracker, and can provide bills based on actual usage. This should reduce the amount of estimated bills you will receive.

Why is SSE installing Smart meters?

The Government requires all energy companies to install Smart meters into homes and businesses by 2020. Go to GOV.UK for more information.

When will SSE customers get Smart meters?

We're starting to install smart meters in 2014, and our target is to have them all installed by the end of 2020.

What if I want a Smart meter now?

We'll write to you when we're ready to fit your smart meter, but you can tell us you'd like one by completing our online form.

Will I still be sent energy bills?

Yes. Your Smart Energy Tracker is for information only and you will still receive bills unless you’ve registered for paperless billing. If you’re not registered for paperless billing, switch now.

Will I save money with smart meter(s)?

The smart meter measures your energy usage accurately and you will be charged for the energy you actually use instead of an estimation. By using your Smart Energy Tracker and viewing your energy usage online you can see how and when you use energy. Understanding how you use energy can help you to make changes to your pattern of usage that could help to save you money.

What happens if I change supplier after my Smart meters have been fitted?

If we fit your Smart meters and you leave us to join a new supplier, your new supplier may not be able to offer the full functionality of your Smart meters and you should check this with them before switching.

Will a Smart meter cost me money?

There is no up-front cost for a smart meter**. Energy companies, including SSE, are starting to install smart meters right across Great Britain to meet government policy and the costs will be recouped in the same way as other government energy policies: through energy bills. The government expects smart meters to help reduce bills in the long run by helping people use less energy.

I have heard that Smart meters will cost me more money in the long run and will increase my energy bills eventually. Is this true?

Energy companies, including SSE, are starting to install smart meters right across Great Britain to meet government policy, and there is no up-front cost for a smart meter**. The costs will be funded in the same way your current electricity and gas meter is at present, by being spread across all bill payers. The government also expects smart meters to help reduce bills in the long run by helping people use less energy, and SSE continues to work with government and industry to ensure implementation is as cost-effective as possible and is a positive experience for customers.

Do you need one Smart meter for your electricity and one Smart meter for your gas?

Yes, you will need separate meters for both gas and electricity, even if you are a dual fuel customer. We'll aim to install both meters on the same visit to make things as easy as possible for you. If you’re a single fuel customer with us, you will have two separate meter installations (one from us and one from your other supplier).

Will I be charged for installing Smart meters?

There is no up front charge for the installation of your smart meter.** Your Smart Energy Tracker will be provided free of charge.

Will the data sent to and from my meter be secure?

The smart meters and the technology used to transmit the data have very strict security measures applied to them to ensure your data is secure at all times. The data we collect is treated as personal data and falls under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Government's regulations on data privacy and security.

Who will be able to see the information about my energy usage?

You'll be able to see your energy consumption data on your in-home Smart Energy Tracker and by logging into your online account.

We'll need to see your meter readings so we can send accurate bills and carry out other essential tasks. Our access to your meter readings will be governed by the Government's regulations on data privacy and security.

Will I need to interact with the meter for any reason?

No. Your meter will be set up by your installer both to communicate with us and with your Smart Energy Tracker. It will operate automatically.

Will other wireless devices interfere with my tracker?

It is possible for other wireless devices operating on the same frequency (like some home routers) to interfere with the signal. If this happens, try using your tracker in different positions within your home to see where it works best.

  •  †We rely on a mobile phone signal or similar wireless communications technologies to receive your readings. If for any reason this should fail then we will have to produce your bill based on an estimated reading. You don't need to give us meter readings.
**The customer may be subject to an up-front or one-off charge if, prior to the Installation Visit, he/she (a) expressly requests the installation of equipment that exceeds the minimum requirements of the Smart Metering System technical specification; and (b) enters into a contract for the provision of such equipment.
